The Stakes of Building Financial Infrastructure: Lessons from BLINK

Everyone wants to build flashy crypto features. But in emerging markets, solid transactional backbones and security mean the difference between a thriving business and catastrophic failure.

Sometimes the most critical work is the stuff nobody notices until it breaks.

While building Blink, our crypto payment app for merchants, I picked up what looked like standard boilerplate: a password recovery flow, a user details endpoint, and a transactions API. Every app needs these. Just plug in an auth library and move on, right?

A Different Set of Stakes

Not when you're building financial infrastructure for merchants in emerging markets.

A slow transactions endpoint means a business owner is left wondering if they actually got paid over a network that's already fighting them. A weak account recovery flow means they could lose access to their funds, with no bank branch to walk into for help. The stakes are completely different here.

So we couldn't take the easy route.

Standardizing Payments Under Pressure

For the transactions API, it wasn't just about querying a database. It was about aggregating real-time payment data, standardizing it, and serving it to the merchant dashboard in milliseconds reliably, even on patchy connections. For password recovery, we had to enforce strict, bank-level security without making the UX a nightmare for a stressed business owner just trying to log back in.

Then we pushed to production. Merchants started onboarding. Transactions started flowing. And the dashboard just... worked. Data loaded instantly. Account management was seamless. The foundation didn't flinch.

What looked like a boring checklist became the rock-solid backbone of the entire merchant experience.

The Takeaway

Everyone wants to build the flashy crypto features. But if your users can't securely recover their accounts or instantly see their money, none of it matters.
