The Role of A Senior
I used to think senior engineers were just people who knew more technologies.
Now I think the real difference is judgment.
Knowing which abstraction to introduce.
Which optimization actually matters.
Which shortcut becomes technical debt later.
Which feature is worth delaying for stability.
A lot of engineering isn’t technical brilliance.
It’s decision-making under constraints.
Working on real systems taught me that the best engineers are usually the calmest ones in difficult situations because they understand systems deeply enough to simplify problems instead of amplifying them.
That’s the kind of engineer I’m working toward becoming.
